AROUND THE ZULU KINGDOM
THE LOWER SOUTH COAST
For those unfamiliar with South African geography, and that of the KwaZulu-Natal Lower South Coast in particular, there follows a very brief tongue in cheek overview of this popular coastal holiday destination which runs for about a 100kms from Hibberdene in the north to Port Edward in the south. This area, because of its gentle climate, permanently warm seas and semi-tropical flora, has become known as the Hibiscus Coast . While the main attractions are the internationally recognised ‘'blue flag'' beaches and the year-long warm sea, the towns and villages strung out along the R102, which meanders along the coast as far as Port Edward, have a slightly raffish seaside charm and much to interest visitors. This stretch of ocean is the main focus of the remarkable annual sardine migration but landlubbers and adrenalin junkies will also find plenty to occupy them in the spectacular Oribi Gorge and the rolling hills of the hinterland.
Readers should not take this overview too seriously. It is a strictly personal, and probably wildly prejudiced, review of our Hibiscus Coast ! If asked to nominate the top five spots in which to live and invest we would put our money on Southbroom, Ramsgate, Umtentweni, Trafalgar and Marina Beach - not necessarily in that order. (Shelly Beach and Port Edward are also contenders for anyone looking for a busier and more business orientated lifestyle).
But in the end it's all a question of personal preference and price. Wherever you decide to buy on the Lower South Coast you'll almost certainly make money! So go for it!
