Umtentweni
Umtentweni is a suburb with a somewhat split personality. On the landward side of the R102 expensive homes on large stands, some still as big as four acres, climb gently up the hill which overlooks the sea, the Mzimkulu River estuary and the country club. These properties are home to the many professionals and businessmen working in busy Port Shepstone just 3km away. There are very few weekend or holiday homes in this quiet, leafy, suburb.
On the ocean side of the R102 the character changes and a few expensive beach front homes are separated by the railway line, (now very little used), and Commercial Road from more reasonably priced double storey flat developments and attractive small residential complexes. There are also a few shops including a Spar, medical services, two or three good restaurants and a little light commercial development This area of Umtentweni which has an attractive beach and some very good fishing is an old favourite with up-country holidaymakers.
