THE KwaZulu-Natal SOUTH COAST
The KwaZulu-Natal South Coast extends from Durban in the north to Port Edward in the south and inland from the ocean to the sugar plantations, rolling green hills and spectacular mountains of the Natal interior. The majority of the properties offered for sale on this site are on the Lower South Coast and in the coastal strip running from Hibberdene in the north to Port Edward in the south, an area popularly referred to, because of it's sub-tropical flora, as the Hibiscus Coast.
This coastline offers visitors an unbroken chain of fine sandy beaches, placid lagoons and rocky promontories suitable for all forms of water related recreational and sporting activity and the South Coast is particularly fortunate in having no less than four internationally recognised "blue flag" beaches.
The climate is subtropical. Daytime temperatures average 23/24ºC and rarely fall below 10º or rise above 30ºC. Sea temperatures in summer hover around the mid 20's but hardier souls swim or surf all the year round! There is an annual rainy season from October to March but prolonged periods of rain are rare and there are very few days on which the sun doesn't shine!
The warm waters of the Indian ocean are home to a multitude of fish, including virtually all species of game fish, particularly during the annual "sardine run", a unique phenomenon which normally takes place during June and July when the sea temperature falls to below 20 degrees celsius. At this season whales and dolphins are also frequent visitors and are easily observed from the shore. Facilities for all types of angling are available and visitors will be delighted to discover that costs are extremely reasonable by international standards.
For golfers the South Coast is a paradise. There are no fewer than nine superb 18 hole courses of which four are rated among the top 50 in South Africa. Overseas visitors will find green fees exceptionally attractive and the well appointed local clubs will always make strangers welcome. Best of all, the wonderful subtropical climate enables play to take place on these magnificently scenic courses almost every day of the year.
The South Coast has always been a popular domestic holiday destination but there has recently been a significant increase in the number of overseas visitors, (and investors), particularly from Europe. Many of these, recognising exceptional value when they see it, have purchased either permanent or vacation homes on the Hibiscus Coast. As a result of this growing interest, facilities for many other types of leisure activity are being rapidly developed. Visitors can now go on birding, wildlife or whale watching safaris, test their luck at deep sea angling, take a heart stopping leap off the edge of the spectacular Oribi Gorge or meander through the many art and craft centres, coffee shops and galleries.
